Photographer's Note

This is from Tbilisi, Georgia, in 2012. I don't remember taking this particular photo, but it was from somewhere very close to this place. It's from when I was on my way to the orthodox Tsminda Sameba (Holy Trinity) cathedral, opened as recently as 2004. As in my earlier photo this is a place to buy candles to burn in the cathedral. These are obviously made of beeswax, the kind of candle generally preferred. It is also common to use small cups of oil with floating wicks. Modern paraffin wax candles are not usually regarded as suitable for the churches.

The candles have several symbolic meanings in orthodox churches, generally referring to purity of heart and mind and the light of belief.

Here is a larger version.

I have previously shown the Tsminda Sameba cathedral in this workshop.
