Photographer's Note

While on leave in the Philippines in 1980 I visited Angeles city. Every morning I was greeted by this young girl with box in hand trying to peddle her chewing gum. She would run across the street screaming chicklets-chicklets. Of course I would cave in and contibute to her well being. Even though her grandfather I would presume would fill her box before he sent her across the road. I would give him a wave and prepare to meet my newfound friend each mnorning. you see when I first came to this country I was there to party hard and relax in the sun. But I was not prepared for the poverty that opened my eyes to the pain and suffering of these proud people. Marcos was still in power with a 12 midnite curfew that was enforced no matter who you were. Many of the 16 days I spent there was just a culture shock in the worst way. They were hungry, they were poor, but still full of life. You see this image is all pretend in a strange way. My little friend wore the same dirty white shirt and blue shorts every day that I was there. The day before I flew back to Japan. I asked the little girl to wear her best dress, and I would take her picture. To my suprise she wore this pleated red skirt for her photograph. My heart shed happiness at the sight of this girl ready to pose in her best dress. I was humbled to say the least. 38 years later when I start feeling sorry for myself, I just look at this image of hope. Sometimes the when you look at the young.....they may have nothing, but in reality...they have everything.
Cheers
