Photographer's Note

Thais are found of apples, even there almost are no apple trees in the kingdom. Since the early 1980s Thailand is importing apples, mostly from the U.S. and South Africa. Three decades ago, the Thai government started to promote milk and apples to school children. Especially apples were very expensive and sold by piece, often for almost one USD/piece! Now the price has come down but still you will have to fork out for medium sized apple 20-25 cents like the one seen in this shot of the "apple-woman" in the Hat Yai morning market Kimyong. Still highly priced are the apples imported from Japan, which can cost a few dollars/piece.
