Photographer's Note

a church on Sunday

---

SINT-MARTENS-LATEM is a community on the river Leie, just a bit south of Ghent. It consists of Sint-Marens-Latem proper and Deurle.

"Latem" used to be an artists' colony. There were two groups of artists here. The first group were mysticists and symbolists, the second laid the foundations of Flemish expressionism. Both groups shared a love for the honest simplicity of FLemish countrylife. As artists, though, they remained individualists and never really founded schools or wrote manifesto's.

The first group included Gustave Van de Woestyne and George Minne. Leading figures in the second group were Permeke, Gust De Smet and Frits Van den Berghe. Later other artists settled in Deurle and Sint-Martens-Latem too.

Nowadays Sint-Martens-Latem is very posh. It is one of the wealthiest municipalities in Belgium. Sadly, the beautiful Leie riverside has been completely built up with expensive villa's and residences, golf courses, private clubs, etc. Lovely for the happy few, but a pity really.

THIS PICTURE shows the Sint-Martinus church in the centre of Sint-Martens-Latem.
