Entrance Basilica of the Holy Blood

The Basilica of the Holy Blood consists of a lower chapel and upper chapel. The lower chapel, dedicated to Saint Basil, is a rare example of Romanesque architecture in the coastal area. The sober decorated prayer room is overwhelmed by stone bone vaults resting on heavy pillars. Above the entrance to the side aisle you notice a remarkable half relief with a representation of the Baptism of Christ (Tournai studio 12th century). You reach the upper chapel via the Ter Steeghere stairwell, with reconstructed bluestone fa蓷de in transition style from late Gothic to early Renaissance. The relic of the Holy Blood, allegedly brought to Bruges by the Crusaders, is kept here in the Holy Blood Chapel. The chapel was rebuilt in the 15th century in Gothic style, but is especially important because of its 19th-century neo-Gothic decoration. The church was elevated to a basilica in 1923 because of the special worship of the Holy Blood.

I hope you like it.
