Photographer's Note

A row of guild houses surrounding the Grote Markt, a square in the center of Antwerp. The original houses were built in the 16th century.

During the Middle Ages, each guild of merchants: tailors, archers, grocers, carpenters, coopers built their own unique house to reflect their success. A large part of the Grote Markt burned down in a fire in 1576. The historic houses were reconstructed in the 19th and early 20th centuries in Flemish Renaissance style.
