Photographer's Note

This is The Rotunda Hospital in Dublin. Since its foundation in 1745 it has seen over 300,000 babies born. One of those 300,000 bouncing babies to be born in this iconic hospital was our TE friend Noel, who very kindly showed me around his beautiful native city and Newgrange in County Meath. So I dedicate this photo to Noel in gratitude of a wonderful and unforgettable day.

Originally located in Georges Lane, the hospital was re-located to its present site in 1757. It was designed by architect Richard Cassels who also designed Powerscourt House, Leinster House and Russborough House. Originally known as the Dublin Lying In Hospital, it was founded by surgeon and mid-wife Bartholomew Mosse who was appalled at the conditions pregnant women in Dublin endured. Looking at the image, youll note that there is no rotunda. This is because the part of the hospital which was the rotunda now forms part of the Gate Theatre next to it. Unfortunately my wide angle lens was not wide enough to include it, but I have a separate shot of the Gate Theatre taken during the day as a Workshop.
