Photographer's Note

"Aeneas and Anchises" is the first of the "4 Borghese groups" 264 265 265WS commissioned to Gian Lorenzo Bernini by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, and which gave him immediate glory (1619-1620).
The sculpture is still influenced by the "mannerist style" of his father Pietro Bernini.

"Mannerism" is an intermediate style between the "Renaissance style" and the "Baroque style" which Bernini adopted soon afterwards.
--The "Renaissance style" (15th century) had enhanced the beauty of the human body, as in Antiquity, without putting much movement in it.
--The "Mannerist style" (1520 ~ 1580) is characterized by movement, torsion ...
--The "Baroque Style" (~ 1650 ~ 1850): The movement is more sustained, even exaggerated, exuberance of forms, dramatic effects 264 265 265WS

This sculpture represents the 3 ages of life where Anchises carries on his shoulders a statue of the gods "lares", gods of the family home.
He is himself carried by his son Aeneas who is followed by his young grandson Ascagne carrying the Sacred Fire.

Anchises was a mortal related to the royal family of Troy.
While guarding his herds, the goddess Aphrodite (Venus) met him and fell in love , struck by his beauty.
They had a son, Aeneas, but Aphrodite ordered Anchises to never reveal their union, which he did on a night of drunkenness. To punish him, she left him lame (or blind) until the end of his life.
At the time of the fall of Troy, Aeneas, one of the heroes of the Trojan War, fled carrying his father Anchises, and followed by his young son Ascagne.

I think the sculpture shows filial and fatherly love on 3 generations.
