Photographer's Note

This is Castle Street, Pilies gatv, in the heart of the Old town of Vilnius, capital of Lithuania.

On the hill in the background you can see the Gediminas Tower, Gedimino pilies boktas, dating back to the 14th century but rebuilt a number of times. Today it houses a small museum and offers a good view of the city from the roof.

You may think that the lady in the blue jacket standing in the foreground is actually watching me. I can tell you she's not. She had been standing looking in this direction long before I arrived, as you can see from the workshop photo.

To my mind Vilnius is the nicest of the three Baltic capitals. Fans of Tallinn (Estonia) and Riga (Latvia) will no doubt challenge that opinion, but I found in Vilnius a very appealing blend of old and new (even in the Old town), high and low, rough and polished, catering for the locals as much as for the tourists, which in my opinion was not quite the case in the very touristic Old towns of the other cities.

Anyway, they are all quite nice.

Here is a larget version.
