Photographer's Note

The Tiled Canal - in the WS can see some more pictures of channel that is on my left side.

The Jamor River, which flows right through the park at Queluz, from north to south, for a distance of 115 metres, is retained in a canal, formerly known as the Great Lake and lined inside with panels of blue and white tiles. In 1756, Jo緌 Antunes was paid to lay around fifty thousand tiles. Between 1775 and 1776, Manuel da Costa Rosado also painted tiles for the Canal.
The themes of the compositions are many and varied: sea ports, towers, castles and landscapes, all executed in the third quarter of the eighteenth century. In the outer section, the tiles which line the recesses with seats in them are brightly coloured, representing elegant and palatial scenes and hunting themes. In 1900, by order of King Carlos and Queen Am幨ia, the whole of this tiling was restored, and there is a commemorative plaque recording this, made of multicoloured tiles, placed in the central part of the canal and depicting the arms of Orl嶧ns.
At this central point there was formerly the Lake House, an 'open-air house' decorated with chinoiserie in the style of the period. It is also known as the Chinese House or House of Music. The Queen's chamber musicians played here on summer evenings while members of the Royal Family drifted in boats on the mirrored waters which, held in cheek by a system of sluices, reflected the tiled panels of the walls. At night torches in the form of gilded and carved wooden cornucopias were lit along the canal.
