Photographer's Note

The Hanging Garden owes its name to the fact that it is installed above a reservoir which collects the surplus water from the lake, an architectonic solution devised by Robillion to overcome the difference in height and raise it to the level of the Ceremonial Fa蓷de. It is also called the Garden of Neptune, and it contains a lake of the same name and also the Lake of Amphitrite.
A document dating from 1758 states that a drainage system is to be constructed, and in 1765 starting the design of flower beds bordered with box that, suggests a parterre de broderie in the French style. Five hundred trees and three hundred box pyramids chestnut, elm, box and myrtle as well as gardening implements, had come directly from the Netherlands at the start of construction on the Palace and its gardens.
In the centre of the Hanging Garden are two imposing lakes Neptune愀 Lake and the Lake of Amphitrite - both decorated with sculptural groups from the London studio of John Cheere. Neptune愀 Lake, near the Fa蓷de of the Ceremonies, is surrounded by six lead sculptures representing three of the Four Seasons (Spring, Summer and Autumn), and two groups Vertumno and Pomona and Meleagre and Atlante (Cheere 1756). The sculptures around the Lake of Nereid, represent 幅ethis sitting on a dolphin, inside a stone shell in the form of a Gun-boat, borne by tritons, and dolphins. At the ends of the garden愀 lesser axis are two smaller lateral ponds, with singeries in lead, popularly known as the `monkey tanks.
