Photographer's Note

The spectacular ridge of Breithorn with Matterhorn on the right.

This shot is taken from Gornergrat - a ridge of the Pennine Alps in Switzerland. It can be reached by the Gornergratbahn rack railway from Zermatt, which commenced its operation 111 years ago as Switzerland's first electrical cog railway. The Gornergrat is located between the Gornergletscher and Findelgletscher and offers a view of 29 peaks rising more than 4000 m.

The glaciers are (from left to right): Breithorngletscher (Breithorn glacier), Triftjigletscher (Triftji glacier) and Unterer Theodulgletscher (Lower Theodul glacier).
The dark rock formation between Beithorn glacier and Triftji glacier is the Triftji area. The plateau at the right of Lower Theodul glacier is the Lichenbretter area.

Breithorn mountain (highest peak 4164m) at extreme left is considered to be the most easily climbed 4,000 m Alpine peak. This is due to the Klein Matterhorn cable car which takes climbers for a starting point to over 3,820 m (12,700 ft) at the Klein Matterhorn (the small ice free peak next to Breithorn), which is the end point of the highest cable car in whole Europe.

Towards extreme right is the mighty Matterhorn Mt., with its 4,478 metres high summit is considered to be an iconic emblem of the Swiss Alps in particular and the Alps in general. It is also one of the deadliest peaks in the Alps: from 1865 when it was first climbed, over 500 alpinists have died on it.
