Photographer's Note

This is "Yakshagana", a musical/dance form enacting epic characters. Yakshagana is a traditional dance form in South India dating back to 16th century. One of the obvious features of the dance is the exuberant make up according to the character being played and look very colourful. Costume and colours combined with strong facial expressions make it successful to depict a character powerfully. It also requires gymnastic skills and an ever-changing rhythm that the dancers need to be in tune with. The music, story, expressions and dances keep the audience engaged and is always entertaining to watch. I happen to get a glimpse of this performer in a world conference on Kannada language in London.
