Photographer's Note

I could imagine that sometimes taking pictures of people could be fraught with complications - especially when the photographer is approaching head on like an approaching comet! There is no disguise, no beating about the bush, no attempting to say that I wasn't trying to take your photo, because it was absolutely apparent that that was my EXACT intention!

Here we have a group of local lads in, I suppose you could say, downtown Portsmouth. Ok, Portsmouth is not exactly the Bronx, or Kingston Jamaica, but it IS a big city, and it has its own issues - some up, some down. Being a port city, people of many different nationalities live here. It has a vibrant night life, a large student community as it is a University city (University of Portsmouth), plus it is one of the oldest naval establishments in the UK: where Her Majesty's Naval Base, Portsmouth, is situated.

But these guys are neither students nor are they the Special Boat Service!

That said, I still had my fast walking shoes on and marched straight through with camera in hand. Luckily I got away with it!

Sometimes you just have to see a shot and go for it. And if you are ever in Portsmouth, just walk around the place, get the feel, and have a great time. It is an amazing city full of history, be it HMS Victory which was Nelson's boat and best known for her role in the Battle of Trafalgar; the Mary Rose Museum dedicated to the 16th century warship; the Spinnaker tower which overlooks the whole city and from where you can see many miles out to sea; the relationship between the port ships which supported the slave trade and those of the Royal Navys West Africa Squadron which were tasked with stopping it; and of course all the groups of Likely Lads that make up this special English south coast city.

Why don't you go see for yourself if you are ever in the area?

It is a great city :)
