Photographer's Note

I took this picture of the Maiden's Tower (tur. Kız Kulesi) on one sunny afternoon sitting nearby. These were just seconds when the helicopter was so close...

There are 2 popular legends about Kız Kulesi:
The first story is of course about love. The girl named Hero was a priestess of Aphrodite who lived in a tower on Bosphorus. When she left it to participate in a ceremony at the Aphrodite temple she met a boy named Leander and they fell in love with each other. Every night she burned the light on the tower so that Leander could find the way to her. Unfortunately, one windy night the light disappeared and Leander drowned in the sea. After that Hero killed herself by jumping to the water...

Another story says that there was a sultan's daughter who was cursed- she was suppoused to die on her 18th birthday because of the snake's bite. Her father loved her very much and decided to put her in the tower on the middle of the Bosphorus. For her 18th birthday she recived a basket of fruit... the snake was inside it so she died.
