Photographer's Note
National Gallery Ottawa in the evening
1200 pixel version
Ottawa, the capital of Canada, is a pleasant mix of old and new.
Founded in 1826 as Bytown, and incorporated as "Ottawa" in 1855, the city has evolved into a political and technological centre of Canada. Its original boundaries were expanded through numerous minor annexations and were ultimately replaced by a new city incorporation and major amalgamation in 2001 which significantly increased its land area. The city name "Ottawa" was chosen in reference to the Ottawa River nearby, which is a word derived from the Algonquin word Odawa, meaning "to trade"
The city is the most educated in Canada, and it is home to a number of post-secondary, research, and cultural institutions, including the National Arts Centre and the National Gallery. Ottawa also has the highest standard of living in the nation and low unemployment. It ranks second out of 150 worldwide in the Numbeo quality of life index, and it contains a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The National Gallery of Canada (French: Musée des beaux-arts du Canada), located in the capital city of Ottawa, Ontario, is one of Canada's premier art galleries.
The Gallery is now housed in a glass and granite building on Sussex Drive with a notable view of the Canadian Parliament buildings on Parliament Hill. The building was designed by Moshe Safdie and opened in 1988. (Wikipedia)

Hi Rob
That's a rather surreal looming building especially in this photo with the combination of dark and light that almost makes the gallery look like a giant birdcage. Perhaps one from Gotham city. Very interesting photo
Cheers

That's a big WOW, Rob.
fabulous view of the transparent edifice with golden afternoon light.
The interior with illumination must be also a stunning sight.
Well taken from a fair distant POV.
Have a nice Friday,

Hello Rob,
As always, you have given us a fascinating and informative note and your photograph, just like your last one, benefits from having been taken at a time, either morning or evening, when the natural light is warm and at a low angle.
I love your strong and bold symmetrical composition and how there is a lovely mixture of natural and artificial light here. The tall angular glass dome stands out perfectly against the sky and the little tunnel through the trees at bottom left leads us nicely into the image.
Lovely warm colours, good contrasts and tones and excellent details too, all despite what must have been very difficult lighting conditions.
Excellent!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello Rob,
A strange and rather eerie image. The gallery with its strong geometric lines silhouetted against the orange sky looks like a space ship about to take off. Very good light management. Wonderful atmosphere. Original photography.

Hallo Rob,

Hello Rob,
This almost looks like the museum is on fire. The effect of the glowing details inside the transparent walls of the building is quite stunning. I also very much like the glimpse of the bottom of the building between the trees. The photo has almost magically captured evening turning into night.
Kind regards,
Gert

Dag Rob,
Op het eerste gezicht zou men denken dat alles in de fik zit.
Het is zeker geen gemakkelijke foto om te nemen met het zwaar contrast.
Maar zeker goed gedaan met oud en nieuw bij elkaar. bedankt.
Prettige dag verder,
John

Hello Rob,
the glass and granite building of the National Gallery in Ottawa is a work of art too, it looks like an enormous sculpture and its design evokes different stages in the history of architecture. The hour of your capture has added to it a special allure, the play of light, the silhoettes, the transparency and the colours are superb features. I like how it rises from the shadows and surpasses the layer of the clouds. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,
Ourania

Hello Rob,
You had some amazing light, when you took this shot!
I can see an artificial light in evidence, but suspect that low sunlight was invloved, too.
The whole edifice looks to be glowing, as if red hot!
The whole reticulated structure can be clearly seen and appreciated.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Rob,
I suppose you travel with Lars together and yet your galleries show completely different views of the trip.
This is quite an extraordinary structure and photographing it in the evening light of setting sun, made it even more unusual.
You have been there at the right time and you have perfectly used the opportunity!

Hallo Rob,
Vele groeten, Paul

Hi Rob,
The point of view is showing the details of the architecture of the National Gallery building. I like the way the light is coming trough the windows. The sharpness is very good. Have a nice day.
