Photographer's Note

The strip of land in the picture is part of Steveston Island. Also known as Shady Island, Steveston Island is located on the south arm of the Fraser River near Steveston, formed as a result of the deposition of dredged materials. Today it provides a habitat for nesting birds, including bald eagles (the bird nest seen in the picture is that of a bald eagle) and a variety of waterfowl species. At low tide, large flocks of shorebirds and ducks forage throughout the year in the exposed saltmarsh vegetation. At the time of the shot, however, the island was in an undisturbed, beautifully tranquil mood. The color is original; no sepia was used.
