Photographer's Note

Looking across the southwest coast of Kauai to the "forbidden island" of Niihau, with the afternoon sun lighting up the sea. The little volcanic cone of Lehua is on the right.

Niihau is a strange place. Seldom visited, it has a small population of Hawaiians who speak the Hawaiian language. They have little to do with the rest of the world. The island is more or less owned by a family who have preserved the Hawaiian traditions. This family came from Scotland via New Zealand and Honolulu back in the 1800s. The inhabitants appear to be all employed by the Robinson family, working on their ranch.

Scanned from a slide. Polariser used, with a lot of underexposure so as not to burn out the bright sky. This makes the foreground black, but i think it adds to the atmosphere of the photo.
