Photographer's Note

The view from the end of the Awa'awapuhi trail on Kauai, looking down to Awa'awapuhi Valley and the sea, 800 m below. This area is the Na Pali coast, the northwestern part of the island, where cliffs plunge straight down to the Pacific Ocean. Valleys cut into the cliffs have impossibly steep sides. I waited some time for the sun to come out for this photo - the higher parts of this coast are often covered in cloud.

The flowers in the foreground are a bit out of focus, but they have a nice colour. To get them out of the picture I would have had to get closer to the crumbling cliff edge, but my sense of self-preservation prevented me from doing so.

Scanned from a slide. Polariser used to emphasise the blue of the sea. I zoomed out to a wide angle (about 35 mm) to get this photo.
