Photographer's Note

This is Salar de Uyuni, South western Bolivia.
It is the largest salt concentration in the world, more the 100 Km across. It is at 3600 meters on the altopiano, in a desert area.

It was an ancient lake, which is now dry. In the middle of the area there is a small "isle", called Isla del Pescado, which is only few hundred meters wide, entirely covered by tall cacti, even 10 meters high. The picture is taken from this "isle".
The place can be visited by 4-wheel drive tours from the small city of Uyuni, which is few Km from the edge of the lake. After the rain season, the salted white surface is sometimes covered by few cm of water and it becomes incredibly bright.

The picture is a scan from a Velvia 50 color slide
