Photographer's Note

This is the road to Chacaltaya, about 1 hour and 30 minutes by 4wd to La Paz, Bolivia.
Chacaltaya is the highest sky resort in the world, at 5300 meters above sea level. There is actually only an old sky lift (donated from the Sestriere sky resort in Italy to Bolivia at the end of the 60s !).
So it is not worth going there to sky. When I was there nobody was skying. Chacaltaya hosts also a cosmic ray laboratory. The car in the picture is from the University of La Paz, and drives a team of researchers and techicians back to La Paz at the end of the day. The road is very rough, as you can see.
The high altitude is ideal to study the primary component of the comsic rays, which is otherwise stopped by the atmosphere at sea level.

From La Paz, it can be reached by a day tour from the many travel agencies in the city.

The place is anyway amazing, with great views on the Altopiano, the city of La Paz, and the peaks of the Andeas.

The picture is a scan from a Velvia 50.
