Photographer's Note

A little busy, and probably really not a good photo, but I like the clouds, and the dark mountains in the distance, and the blue sky. It was about to rain, and there were some very dark clouds basically overhead, so the light was interesting.

Anyway, this is the archaeological site of Wiracochapampa, a Huari-like city on near the present-day town of Huamachuco, in La Libertad, Peru. This has traditionally been thought of as a Huari administrative centre (or regional capital), but my M.A. supervisor and his wife, two archaeologists who have worked extensively in this region, have suggested that this site and the mountaintop site of Marcahuamachuco (visible from Wiracochapampa, and probably a place of festival and ancestor worship for the people of Wiracochapampa) are earlier than Huari, and thus influenced Huari, rather than were influenced by it. Either way, an interesting site in the northern-Andes. Unfortunately, I don't know many specific details of the site, and it has become extremely overgrown (there is a wall or two sticking up through the growth, there), but it has so far only been mapped (after all the growth was cleared), not extensively excavated. My supervisor and his wife are the only archaeologists that have worked in this region since the 1950s (and archaeology has seen many theoretical and methodological developments since that time, and those archaeologists only focused on rather narrow, specific things at Marcahuamachuco...)
