Um dos maiores simbolos da agora de novo perdida independencia de Portugal. Foi um dos ultimos bastiões a cair, na primeira vez que Portugal de facto se tornou um estado marionete, governado por traidores, continuando formalmente a ser considerado independente. Mas em 1830 e ao contrário desta vez, ainda foi preciso a ajuda de forças militares estrangeiras, mais precisamente inglesas, para derrotar os patriotas. Essa é a razão principal agora a esperança sinalizada pelo verde se esbater no horizonte, tal como as montanhas: desta vez não se vislumbra restauração possivel.
