To Royaldevon: Ascent and descent

Hi Bev,

We went up in daylight along a steep and rocky track, and came down in the dark. We all had headlamps to light the way, and the path down is steep but sandy most of the way, so it's pretty...

To emka: A sudden eruption

Hi Malgo,

If there was a sudden eruption we probably would all be killed. But the volcano is well monitored and it was in a quiet phase when we were there, so very unlikely to erupt. Our volcano...

Hi Paul,

Yes it was cold at the summit, about 3330 m altitude. Maybe 0 degrees with a cold wind. I had to stop taking photos after a while because my hands were getting numb and I had to put on my...

Hi Chris,

Yep, cold and windy. I had to stop taking photos after a while because my right hand was getting numb. I thought I better put on gloves before I get frostbite, but I couldn't work the...

To Royaldevon: Not snow

Hi Bev,
That's not snow on the mountain peak but steam emanating from the ground and hugging the mountain because the wind is blowing it sideways. There were patches of snow near the summit area,...

To ifege: No tripod

Even though the info next to the photo says the exposure time was 4 seconds, it was in fact 1/10 sec (Trekearth doing weird things). It was a hand-held shot, but I might have rested my elbows on a...

To emka: Ice giants

The ice giants are beautiful stalactites, stalagmites, columns and cascades made of ice. Photography is not allowed in the cave, so I don't have any photos, but if you Google Eisreisenwelt you will...

To ifege: Staying safe

Thanks Ian. Yes I'm staying safe so far. For once NSW is faring worse than Victoria. Hopefully this wave will pass through quickly and then die down. Just hope the hospitals can cope with the fallout.

To Royaldevon: Bees

Hi Bev,

Yes there were some bees buzzing about. There were so many flowers everywhere that they didn't congregate in any one spot but were spread around quite a bit.

To ifege: Lavender

Hi Ian,
I think its lavender, but I didn't go up close and have a sniff to verify that. It looks like it has been trimmed the way they do in the lavender fields of Provence. Vince

To holmertz: 108 floors

Hi Gert,
Thank you for that information. Originally I thought the building must be 108 floors because of its name, then I read that it is only 100 floors. So thanks for explaining that. Maybe they...

To ikeharel: Craters

Hi Ike,

I looked at those "craters" on Google Earth and they are definitely not volcanic craters or meteorite craters. Just erosion of sedimentary layers that have been folded. I am a geologist so...

To ktanska: No telephoto

Hi Kari,
I took the photo at 73 mm zoom, in other words with almost no telephoto. This is how it looks in real life - the peak is 2400 metres above me, and 4 km away horizontally.
Regards,
vince

To worldcitizen: End of the road

Hi Brenda,
You're right, the road goes straight to the low hills in the middle ground and stops. From there you can walk along tracks going in several directions. Before the end of the road is the...

Hi Bev,
We had some flowers of this very species of everlasting hanging on a wall in our house for more than 20 years. They are also called paper daisies.

Cheers,
Vince

Sounds like one of those travel stories that's enjoyed more in the telling than in the experiencing.

To ifege: Highest sea cliffs

Hi Ian,
Just as I thought - never trust the tourist literature. However, Gran Canaria is definitely not the highest in Europe, because it's not in Europe. The Canary islands are politically part of...

To foxy: Wallaby

Hi Loong,
I don't know if they are friendly, but they are smaller than kangaroos. They probably do kick if they feel threatened. They are shy, so people do not often get close to them.
