Default Architecture + Photography = Job???

I am an Architect intern. And I love photography. I want to combine the two and make a career out of it. Am I dreaming?

For the past year or so I have been concentrating on taking photos, enhancing them, etc. Now, thanx to my wonderful sister who found this site for me, I am able to display them and get some input as to whether I am any good at this photography thing.

I am obviously still learning a lot both in taking photos and enhancing them, but what I really want to know is: Is there any opportunity to make money off this thing? I mean are there jobs out there for people like me?

I would really appreciate suggestions / ideas / advise on this from anyone who knows.
Thank you very much in advance.

Hi Anu
I would say that in Archi ... the photography can always come in handy, and you don't need to be a pro at it.
well the jobs you are looking for would depend on the stream that you want to be the main .... I mean if you are a pro at photography with a secondary base in architecture, I can see the jobs in archi and other landscape magazines coming your way.
if the archi is your main thing than i can see that it can be good help with the planning and all
neways I don't know much about it as I my knowledge of archi is limited from some friends at SPA Delhi long time back

cheers for now .... I hope the info helps

Hi Anu,

I work often with photographers for architecture.
I do not know what the situation is like in Singapore, but here you need to be rather good to make a living out of it. Some specialise for real estate agents, some for architects, some are better on interiors, some better exteriors, details etc.etc. etc.
If you realy want to make a job out of it, all I can advise you it to study photography. For now, start making photo's of buildings, and try to find out if you're talented enough. In the long run, you need good equipment and most of all contacts, because you need work.
Think carefull about it, if you need help with critiques for your photo's, send me a message.

Hello Anuradha,

It is difficult for me to give a good advise because you are from another country and I do not know if you as an intern is still studying architecture or has finished architecture and and being an intern to gain experience and eventually take your registration exam as an architect.

Architecture is a wonderful profession that involves science and art. You must love this profession to be succesful in it. Architecture is very wide in scope. You cannot compare photography and architecture, but you can work in architecture and photography can be a little part of your architectural work. Architecture as an art is not merely knowing how to draw, but knowing how to express what you have in mind into a two dimensional or three dimensional medium. As an architect you are always the lead, or as in music, the conductor. You have command responsibility for the disciplines supporting your project. Be it an environmental engineer, civil engineer, the engineering disciplines, the government, the communities, the arts and the legal system, the construction industry, etc. As an architect you can find work as a practicing architect, as a draftsman, a project manager, a planner, construction inspector, a teacher and other position that fits within the scope of your studies.

If you prefer photography then leave architecture and study photography. It cannot be both because architecture is very demanding.

I hope I explained it clearly but it is all based on the architectural profession I know in the United States and the Philippines.

I'm sure you can earn some money making architecture photography. But only if you can make architecture photos like these for example.

Yes you can most definitely make a career out of both, however, in terms of profit, architecture is the more reliable choice if you want to earn, photography is always good because it is available for almost everyone, however, taking classes in photography is very much appreciated by people who're looking for photographers.

It's possible to join both.

You can have a career using your talents to a degree in architecture magazines, or you can even sell your photographs to other kinds of print media such as newspapers.

You can also get work from people specialising in creating photo blogs about travel destinations and what have you.

Best of luck on your career.
