Eye-catching scenery. I can just hear the mosquitos in this one! Great to get the shot from the middle of the bog, which is not always a welcome place for human travellers. It's a fine shot, but if I would look for somethings different - is the horizon a degree or two tipped ccw? Seems like the vegetation line in the bog should be horizontal. Also, I notice you are shooting an ASA 400 film - I found washed out skies were a frequent problem for me when I used 400, maybe I just didn't understand using it properly, but I favor lower asa's as much as possible, for better richness of colours. Maybe this would have brought out more contrast to emphasize the storm coming? A bit more blue in the sky would have been a good balance to the rich greens... but what can you do, control heaven and earth? ;-)

Hi Maura, thank you for sharing your interesting findings on the negative effects fast film. It is very well possible, I don not have enough experience to confirm this. In any case, I've recently switched to digital so I intend to load my film camera with slow slide film for maximum color saturation.
With regard to the horizon, you're probably right. It was a handheld shot from the middle of the marsh and I tried to correct the horizon in Photoshop but obviously couldn't figure out precisely the optimal angle. |

I find on digital, for whatever reason, when it emulates ASA 400, the effect is similar. I try to force mine to ASA 50 as much as possible. I have a toggle that I can use to alter the asa easily on mine, if it is not in a automatic function setting.
Gads, what were you doing in the middle of the marsh! I hope you were on a boardwalk or trail! |

Now you made me curious, I will photograph the same cloudy sky at ASA 100 (mine doesn't go down to 50) and 800 and compare. I haven’t heard of this before, but it would be yet another good reason to avoid high ASA if possible.
No, I'm not a boardwalk kind of person, I was balancing on roots and fallen trees trying to get a good shot. And there were plenty of mosquitoes... |
