hi Jorge,
one trick I use when some parts in the scene are very bright, is spot metering from the brightest spot and then setting exposure compensation to +1.3 or higher (the precise setting depends on the situation). I used this method when photographing the Pope at the UN, for example, when his bright white clothes stood out against the darker background. try it some times, may be it works for you.
I don't mind the strong sepia/yellow cast, it actually fits the mood. the perspective is great too, but I agree that the lack of focus is a little distracting.
