extremely well done with emphasis on the people and the faded background makes this picture alive. What was Benin called previously? Jancsi (Janos)

Default To paprika-jancsi: Dahomey / Benin

Hi Janos,

Benin was previously known as Dahomey between 1960 (when the country gained independence from France) until 1975. They changed the name for political reasons, largely to build solidarity amongst a very ethinically diverse population. Dahomey was named after one of the most powerful kingdoms of Benin (which is centred in present day Abomey), whereas Benin is named after the Bight of Benin and is thus more politically neutral.

Dahomey, indeed! Thank you, Caleb. I recall an interesting episode in Jules Verne's Five Weeeks in a Balloon (which I read as a teenager) where the heroes had an emergency landing and had a rather unpleasant experience.
