Interesting picture! Do you know what is the nature of these cones? Are all inhabitant caves at your picture or it is small part only?

The cones are made of tuff (aggregated volcanic ash). Erosion left a lot of those cones in this region, as they were protected by a rock on the top (in this case the protecting rock has already fallen down). If you click on "Nevsehir" above the picture, you will find a lot of other pictures with such cones, some of them with the rock still on the top.
It is very easy to carve out some rooms in the tuff cones (even with finger nails), so it is not very expensive to build a house or to add a room... However, this kind of habitation is now considered as dangerous, and people are not allowed to carve anymore. In addition the state has built "classical" villages for the inhabitants of the caves.
