Photographer's Note

For a non-Muslim person visiting Cairo, there are few events that are as fascinating as the Friday prayer. Virtually the entire city shuts down for the weekly event, and scores of Egyptians can be seen filing into local neighbourhood mosques to pray. This photograph was taken from the eighth floor of the building where I lived just off Tahrir Square. During the Friday prayer, mosques quickly reach capacity, and adjacent side streets are converted into prayer areas.
