Jemaa el-Fna square at dusk

Heres the famous Marrakech square with the Koutoubia minaret behind. As dusk falls, the square becomes a huge open-air dining area, packed with stalls lit by gas lanterns, and the air is filled with smells and plumes of cooking smoke spiraling up into the night. Its an often-photographed scene. Several of the restaurants surrounding the place have roof deck offering wonderful points of view. They are very popular around sunset.

Jemaa el-Fna is renowned for its vibrant life, evolving from daytime to nighttime: acrobats, snake charmers, storytellers, musicians playing all kinds of instruments, etc.

The "Cultural Space of Jemaa el-Fna Square" is on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage (proclaimed in 2001, inscribed in 2008). Through a compendium of the different oral and intangible treasures of humankind worldwide, this program aims to draw attention to the importance of safeguarding intangible heritage, which has been identified an essential component and a repository of cultural diversity and creative expression.
