Photographer's Note
Festival Frames #3 - Catch the Rain
Catch the Rain was taken at Bushfire, Swaziland's premier music and arts festival, which tends to take place over a Friday, Saturday, Sunday in late May / early June (in 2017 it will be 26 to 28 May). Focussing originally on African music, Bushfire has been going for around 10 years now. As the festival has grown the World Music component has increased, as has the quantity of more popular South African groups.
The shot comes from a theatrical production on one of the smaller stages - the performer's name eludes me - he is a South African now based in Australia.
In terms of visiting the festival - Swaziland is a great place to live in and a great place to visit. Bushfire is getting more and more popular - with a growing influx of, especially South african and Mozambican visitors - but in my travels in Southern africa in Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe I have had conversations with people who were definitely coming. Tickets tend to sell out a couple of weeks prior to the festival with a crowd of around 20 000 with a very multi-national and multi-ethnic makeup.

Hi Iain
Incredible timing that enabled you to capture the expression on the man's face, the gesture and, above all, froze the liquid mid-air and created a surreal effect.
Dark background works really well too.
Best wishes

Hello Iain,
I have certainly learnt something from your notes.
Bushfire is a whole new festival, to me!
This is just an amazingly original shot!
The man's expression is priceless!
The liquid, frozen in time, can be traced in an arc!
I think you were right to limit the colour so that nothing detracts from the focal figure.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Iain,
Great photo of this artist, the timing is excellent. I really like the expression on his face as well as all the splashing drops of water around him. The lighting is superb, especially against the dark background. Great work!
