Photographer's Note
The top contender for the 2008 Olympic Gold in the new extreme sport of smiling. Beijing won't even see her coming...
She trains hard, everyday, to the point her head hurts. Total dedication...
Her equipment: A couple brand new front teeth and a large ice cube...
How she trains - licking the icecube until total brain freeze...No one said it would be easy but she knew that. The price that has to be paid for the gold. Look out Beijing...Here she comes.
Actually, this is part of the middle of the boat seen here from my last Cambodia post. Taken in the floating village of Chong Kneas on Tonle Sap, just down the road from Siem Reap. A boat full of girls that looked like they were just plain happy. The little girl in the back just kept yelling "Hey Mister...Picture!!!" and the one in the front was just rowing like crazy. They all wanted their picture taken just for the fun of it.
This one's for Dennis (Dpbours) because not all children in third world countries are miserable.
This is also for John Brown (zips) who realizes that even though their not all miserable, alot are.
I have a total respect and admiration for both of them. Trying to do their part to help the world and the people in it. Trying to make life better for people who, although may not be miserable, need some help. Both are out in the field working to find and provide a better future for them all.

Hi John,
The smile is so perfect , it touches the heart. A million dollar shot for immortalising the litle kid.
Yes, I repeat its an incredible smile and a wonderful composition......but with an irony.
I have an objection......"This one's for Dennis (Dpbours) because not all children in third world countries are miserable".
Logically speaking ....this statement means majority of the children in the third world countries live a life of misery.
Its not true. What prompted you to conclude this? I don't know.
Please go through a few lines underneath.....
If you knew a woman who was pregnant, who had 8 kids already, three who
were deaf, two who were blind, one mentally retarded, and she had syphilis,
would
you recommend that she have an abortion?
Read the next question before looking at the answer for this one.
Question 2:
It is time to elect a new world leader, and only your vote counts.
Here are the facts about the three leading candidates.
Candidate A - Associates with crooked politicians, and consults with
astrologists. He's had two Mistresses. He also chain smokes and drinks 8
to 10
martinis a day.
Candidate B - He was kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon, used
opium
in college and drinks a quart of whiskey every evening.
Candidate C - He is a decorated war hero. He's a vegetarian, doesn't
smoke,
drinks an occasional beer and never cheated on his wife.
Which of these candidates would be your choice?
Decide first, no peeking, and then scroll down for the answer.
....
.....
.......
........
~~~~~ Candidate A is Franklin D. Roosevelt.
~~~~~ Candidate B is Winston Churchill.
""""" Candidate C is Adolph Hitler.
...
...
...
And, by the way, the answer to the abortion question:
If you said yes, you've just killed """"""""""Beethoven""""""""""""""
So nothing wrong with the shot.....nothing wrong with the shots......but don't kill Beethoven.
Kind Regards,
Rajeev Moudgil

Hello John
You captured a great moment. She's so cute.
Your composition is really perfect. The texture of the water, the sharpness, all is excellent.
It's also judiciously framed.
Goord work, compliments.

Hi John,
Haha, great note going with it! Like the part of the ice and the daily training. The dedication already at this age. Wonderful!
Oh, I now only get to the part of ... me! Ohw, that is really nice of you and very much appreciated. Well, there are thousands of people doing that. And you don't need to go out in the world to do it. There are so many people doing it every day in their own neighbourhood at home...
Haha, also just read the note of Rajeev. :-) I like my piece of meat, so I would perhaps not have voted for the vegetarian and I don't like cheaters. I'm more of a whiskey person - and I already knew that had to be Churchill, reading the description :-).
But I would not rate India as a development country. More as a Middle Developed Country in development. Especially the second part is important - sustainable development. And next to that, I post my pictures to show the harsh life, but not pity children. I rather show their strength! As you do in this wonderful shot!
Thanks!
Greetings, Dennis

HI John,
She is so striking .. so wonderful .. such a child .. it is wonderful that she can be so .. another great image to put life in perspective for us .. This is one of those images that keeps giving more the more you give it (what I would call art) .. the ordinary life around her is so contrasted by the almost surreal mystical feel of the water .. wonderful image.
take care,
John

Hello John
The smile pulled me to this picture...I stopped in admiration. Then I read your note... interesting! Rajeev's critique & your thread with him make good reading. But is it a secret that, to a Western eye (well most, if not all), the poverty in the so called developing countries is a peach for photography? I guess it's exotic to their eyes. But that’s not my point here. What you highlight in your photograph is the inner beauty of the child. Here poverty or being wealthy doesn't matter, because the smile is pure. Her living on Tonle Sap may have made her & quite a few kids, a souvenir for camera toting tourists, & maybe a way to earn some money, but her smile remains beautiful, innocent & pure & that is why I like this photograph. I also like your excellent use of DOF & the abundance of blue here.
With Regards
Angshu

Hi John,
Only able to see her teeth but not able to see her eyes, she is smiling, happy and shy. Perfect skill to made the water surface smooth like a fabric, good contrast of vivid color, completed with the goods carry with her wooden boat.

Amazingly beautiful and uplifting shot! I love the strong blue tones and the nice bright (but not too bright)light. The smile on the girl's face is priceless. The POV is great and the sharpness and lack of noise and other distractions is truly incredible. Well done!

Hello John,
At this point I really do look out for a shot of yours..may be I dont write on them but i do see them as in my eyes u are noticed..!!
Now, I saw this image twice..!! once before reading the fellow members comments and the following threads and now after i read them in full..!!
And the immediate expression that comes to my mind and soul and the most immediate expression of mine while just watching the pic downloading was a ..W O W..!!!!
Who cares.......!!!!!
The smile takes it all and explains everything beyond anything..I loved Rajeev,s comment..a lot to laern from it and also the beautifully knitten words of Angshuman..but just looking at it now after having read them...its like.. the expression from this cute little baby is Oh Ho..!!!!!! what have I done..!! just see it again and feel/hear her saying that..!!
Isnt she so cute..???
Isnt she so pure..??
Isnt she so beautiful..??
Isnt she so innocent..??
Do you see god in her..??? i am taking the perspective a little further now..!! cud you see the god residing in her..!! I cud see it here in your photograph..telling you very frankly..!!! This is one of the purest smile i have seen in TE and thanks to you for this..!!
I would just talk about myself and would not relate anything to the critiques written by any other member..!! but seeing her in this shot i can see god and purity at its best presented by you in the form of a beautiful cute little baby..who is definitely struggling but at the same time spreading love and laughter thru this beautiful smile of hers...and U have been the lucky guy to get it..!!!
thanks a lot..!!! for this treat.. Dear John..!!!
Deep Regards,
Indro

Superbe portrait plein de joie de vivre. Je reviens du Cambodge et je confirme que cette photo est à l'image du pays : superbes couleurs, et des gens incroyablement gentils et souriants.

Beautiful colors and expression.
Contrast of clear water, as it seems here and shabby girl in good mood is very captive.
TFS.
Note is also captive.

Hi John, I just saw this on the Featured Critiquie. Your response was very graceful - all about what TE is. As to the image, it would have to be one of my favourite all time portraits on Te. Beautiful colours, clarity and capture of "the decisive moment": that million dollar grin. Congrats, Lisa.
Laz (8) 2011-01-30 11:43
Oh gee, you got me, is what she seems to be saying.
Strikingly beautiful shot!
