Conques-sur-Orbiel, 10 km north of Carcassonne (Aude, France).
We can see here a whole of stone huts called "capitelles".
This typical appellation of the scrublands of the Gard has propagated to the others lands of Languedoc.
Elsewhere, this kind of construction is called "cabane" (Dordogne, Mounts of Lyonnais, Beaujolais, causses of Lot...) or "borie" (Gordes, Vaucluse).
We also find this kind of shelter around the Mediterranean sea : Spain and Majorque ("barraca"), Italy ("ciabotte", "casedda" or "trullo") and Sardigna ("nuraghe"), Slovenia ("hiska"), Croatia ("bunja"), Malta ("girna"), Crete ("mitada")... and also in the great britain islands.
Of different shapes (circular, cyllinder-shaped, square, with chisels...), these buildings were used to keep the tools and equipment safe, as the men.
Most of them we can see nowadays were built between the XVIIth and the early XXth centuries by farmers, winegrowers or workers who could by some land and clear it.
