People from India, the Rabaris are often viewed as parents of the gypsies. Probably coming from Persia or central Asia, they supposedly installed in India about one thousand years ago
Based in their ancestral region in the Kutch desert, they start their transhumance as soon as the monsoon is over and mainly wander in Gujarat and Rajasthan, sometimes even further to Uttar Prudesh or Madhya Pradesh, looking for pastures. The "green revolution" launched by the indian government in 1947 has led to some exhausting of the soils and to some desertification of the traditional grazing areas, pushing the Rabaris to lead their herds further and further. They also had to give up camel breeding and focus on goats and sheep.
