Photographer's Note

Whether you've just experienced a hot and heavy liplocking session with your girlfriend, or your date just gave you a friendly hug, lipstick can easily get onto the collar of your shirt.

Pesky stains caused by products such as lipstick can easily be removed from your shirt by following the simple steps below.

first and foremost
It's highly recommended to treat the stain as soon as possible. Although cosmetic stains do not ruin your clothes, the sooner you treat the stain, the better. Even if you notice this while you're out and don't have the luxury to act accordingly, do so as soon as you arrive home.

If you are out when you notice the stain and don't have the necessary equipment at your disposal, you can always dab, (not rub!) the stain with water. This should suffice until you get home.

plan of attack
Because lipstick is a grease-based cosmetic, it is recommended to use a prewash stain remover before washing or rinsing the shirt, but there are other methods that have been proven effective using other products around the house.

Very important! Before moving on, read the care label of the shirt to see if the fabric of the shirt calls for any special care or treatment, or if certain products should be avoided.

stain removers
Apply a prewash stain remover and rinse in warm water.
Do not rub, as rubbing may worsen the stain and can make it more grounded. Blot or dab the stain with the stain remover by using a white washcloth or towel.
If the stain still isn't out, apply a liquid detergent and rinse in warm water.

alcohol
Using a cloth (again, preferably white), dab the stain with rubbing alcohol. Gently rub dishwashing detergent onto the stain with your finger. For persistent stains, apply a stain remover stick to the stain and leave it on for a few minutes. Wash the shirt (only if it's machine washable, of course).

ammonia
Blot off as much of the lipstick as you can with water.
Dab the stain with a little bit of ammonia (fabric permitting). Rinse and wash in soapy water.

hairspray?
If you live with a woman, you are likely to have hairspray in the house. Here's a great use for it!
