View of Re闥 Palace in Szeged by Ede Magyar

The Re闥 Palace (Hungarian: Re闥-palota) is an Art Nouveau building in downtown Szeged. The leading motif of the building became water. It is represented by the row of blue water lilies decorating the snow white facade, the balcony rails evoking whirling water-plants and the animated variety of different wall-surfaces resembling waves. The palace, originally built as a residential building, has been housing the Regional Arts Centre since 2007. In the last couple of years visitors have been able to admire works by Picasso, Goya, Chagall and Rembrandt, among others at the temporary exhibitions. Besides, RE焗 is also a popular venue for musical programmes, smaller theatre performances and other cultural events.

Ede Magyar (1877 1912) was an architect, nicknamed 'the Hungarian Gaudi' for his similar organic style.

He became a master builder after studying in Budapest in 1901, and completed further studies abroad. His short but notable career focused on Szeged where he designed the Re闥 Palace (1907) and numerous other organic buildings. He was only 35 when he committed suicide following disappointment in love.
