Photographer's Note

These two boys followed me around in Matmata one evening while my friend Fredrik was back at the hotel twisting in pains from his stomach problems.

The boy to the left showed me his home for two dinars. He lived in a traditional Berber cave. The white poles in the background encircle one of these holes (actually one where some Star Wars-scenes were shot). The caves are dug out from the hillside and then open up in the middle to let the sun come in, like an atrium. So here we are standing on top of some caves and the background hole is the atrium. People live underground to protect themselves from the heat, and historically to remain unnoticed by invaders.

The boys were kind of fun, they begged me for candy the whole time, but did it with a lot of humour, and it was effective :). At a first glance they seem to be pretty well-provided, but the holes in their shirts suggest otherwise. I like how they look really proud and try to not look their age.

I would have liked to have a more portrait-like picture, but the quality of the picture is too poor for me to crop that much, this is already cropped a lot. Editing included some contrast and saturation adjusments and the usual sharpening.
