Photographer's Note

This is a very ordinary crowded street in Dhaka, Bangladesh, as they looked in 1972, before they were taken over by cars. People were mainly transported by bicycle rickshaws, or had their own bikes.

High above the crowds you see large posters advertising new movies. 1972 was the first year of independence for Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan, and 29 movies produced in the young nation were released. Probably some of them described events from the war of independence, which had ended exactly one year earlier, December 16 1971.

Local artists had made big business by decorating the backrests of the rickshaws with scenes from the war. I have posted one such seat in a WS.

Both photos were scanned from Orwo negatives. Here is a larger version of the main photo.

With this photo I finish my series of original b&w photos. I probably have lots of them left, but evaluating and scanning negatives is very time-consuming, so from my next upload I will start showing forgotten or neglected photos from the digital era.
