Photographer's Note

Following the murder of the French teacher Samuel Paty for showing a caricature of the prophet Muhammad in his class, our government has defended the freedom of expression. Huge anti-French demonstrations took place in Dhaka these last weeks to condemn France's position on the subject of the caricatures. I am posting this series in tribute to Bangladesh. I wish I would not be penalized by this affair and be able to return to this wonderful country.

Hazrat Shahjalal international airport is the largest international airport in Bangladesh. It is located in Kurmitola, 17 kilometres from the city centre, in the northern part of the capital city, Dhaka. The airport is named in honour of Shah Jalal, who is one of the most respected Sufi saints of the country. It is the primary hub of the national flag carrier Biman Bangladesh airlines.

Light condition were not great, Miguel, however, managed a sharp picture of the tarmac with passngers line-up near the plane.

Hello Miguel,
I don't usually find airports very interesting, but this is a well composed photo. The line of passengers waiting to board the flight make a nice parallel with the terminal building and the brighter area of the clouds. The subdued light produced pleasantly soft colours.

Interesting note. I suppose that also in the future most of the inhabitants of this country will receive you very well.
But it's always possible that you meet someone with crazy ideas at the wrong time and in the wrong place and you never know what will happen.
Most likely this will not happen, but it can. This can also happen in many other countries and we have little control over it.
I was in Egypt in 2003 shortly after the US invasion of Iraq. Officially it was an international force that was going to liberate Iraq. In the center of Cairo there were then many demonstrations against those countries.
But a Belgian friend who was working in Cairo at the time convinced me to go anyway. She told me the demonstations lasted three days and then life just went on.
I went to Egypt and everyone was very friendly to me. I didn't experience any problem.
Of course I could have met a madman at the wrong time. That was and is also possible in Brussels. But it didn't happen and the vast majority of the Egyptian population did not blame me.
It is best to wait a while to see how everything evolves. We cannot travel for a long time with the corona problems.
On the other hand, new facts may also arise while you're already in the country. But again, that's possible in many countries. Also when you're in your own country.
So you've already been to Bangladesh. I'm curious about your photos and experiences.
When I was in Nepal, I met some travellers from Bangladesh and they turned out to be very friendly people.

A good overview of the airport with the low airport buildings in the background and the tail of an aircraft on the left. The people are well included in the middle as well.

is it the beginning of a new reportage?...
It seems quite serious reaction for what a teacher has done in his class. The new US president has made funny jokes about Polish people... but it is ok to make fun of "Easter Europeans", our lobby is too week in Washington or in Western Europe.
You are right it is sad that events like that are making travel more difficult.

Hello Miguel,
Do you live in France? I always thought you were from Spain. I have heard about the protests in Bangladesh. I saw some photos and they looked at the first sight like from Warsaw, we had also massive demonstrations at just the same time. Interesting view of the airport in Dhaka. I planned the trip to Bangladesh one year ago, I choose the places I would like to visit, but finally, I went to Saudi Arabia. It was easier.
