Photographer's Note
A guard at the opening of the forbidden city. He can hide from the sun under his umbrella,
In the forbidden city they can handle 80,000 people (mainly Chinese tourists) a day. When you come after 10.00 a.m. you are too late.

Hello Gerrit, by coincidence I was reading about Chairman Mao this afternoon!
There is an interesting contrast between the solitary guard in the foreground and the crowd of visitors in the background.
A very good composition and with good sharpness.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Gerrit,
This must be the most boring job imaginable, but I suppose that young man is forbidden to have such thoughts. His uniform matches the parasol and other surrounding items well and makes a nice contrast to the red tones of the background. I wonder how often they have to change the Mao portrait before it gets dirtied by the pollution. The crowd waiting to get inside the gate looks huge. It's a classic Beijing view which looked the same 50 years ago, except for the visitor's clothes.
Best regards,
Gert

Hallo Gerrit,

Vele groeten, Paul

a classic image of the Forbidden City, but always good to see. Well composed with the guard off centre and with extremely good colours. The numbers you quote are just incredible - 80,000 visitors per day!

Hi Gerrit
There are three key areas included in this shot; namely pic of Mao, the guard & umbrella and the Chinese characters. I think you have arranged this to your best ability and I guess there's nothing much you can do from this viewpoint even though I feel that there's a slight distraction on Mao's pic coz by part of the protruding umbrella. I love the richness of colour and vivid detail. Well done
Best regards

Hello Gerrit, Excellent composition, original view of the famous place. The guard is well protected against the sun or rain. But to stay so motionless for some hours is hard anyway. I wonder why it is forbidden to go by this white bridge. There is another guard on the other side.
Stay safe

Hello Gerrit,
You have told us so much in this single, beautifully composed, well exposed photograph.
The guard, on duty, protecting Chairman Moa, whilst being protected himself, from the sun. Behind him, the crowds have no time for the Chairman, they are flocking eagerly to see inside the Forbidden Palace. Well the name tells you so much and why they would want to investigate!
There was a very interesting programme on TV this week, all about the Forbidden Palace. I feel already to have had a guided tour and to understand the ultimate power of the reigning emperor.
Thanks for this.
Keep safe,
Bev :-)

Dag Gerrit,
Dit is een maatregel om orde te scheppen voor te veel toeristen.
De schildwacht staat fiks voor zijn leider.
Heel mooi foto werk, bedankt.
Groeten en hou het veilig,
John.
