Photographer's Note
Clinging like a swallow's nest to the sides of a shay conical hill, the magnificent Gompa of Chemrey sees very few visitors because of its location - tucked up the side valley that runs from below Hemis, to the Chang-la pass into Pangong. If one isn't having one's own vehicle, then be prepared to do some walking to get there. It takes around fifty minutes to follow the dirt track down to the river and up to the monastery after the Leh -Thak Thok bus drops one off beside the main road.
Chemrey Monastery or Chemrey Gompa is a 1664 Buddhist monastery, approximately 40 kilometres (25 mi) east of Leh, Ladakh, northern India. This monastery of the Drugpa (Red Hat) sect or monastic order in located in eastern Ladakh. It dates back to the 17th century. Today, the Ladakh Chemrey Gompa houses around 20 monks of the diminishing Drugpa community, along with their young novices.
Samsara is a 2001 independent Indian/Italian/French/German film which tells the story of a Buddhist monk's quest to find Enlightenment was shot near Chemrey.
As dark clouds loomed, I took as series of pictures framing the Monastery with the stupas on the right and the mani stones on the left (You can see words 'Om Mani Padme Hum' etched on the stones). Soon it started to snow...

Hello Angshuman,
Apart from the brown and grey tones there are very few other colours seen here. It's a fascinatingly monotonous scenery, however made iively and interesting by the cubistic buildings and the stupas and mani stones. I wonder how the atmosphere would have changed on a sunny day. To my mind the dark clouds suit this view perfectly.
KInd regards,
Gert

Hi Angshuman,
The stupas are helping to frame the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the houses and of the monastery. The cloudy sky is giving a good contrast to the colors. Have a nice dya.

Hello Angshuman,
The composition of this picture is very good. The stupas in the foreground are aligned to make a diagonal line which drives the eye toward the village and the monastery.
Moreover, the dark grey sky gives a real mood to the picture.

Bonjour Angshuman,
Quelle belle composition. Le point de vue bien choisi et la contre plongée donne beaucoup de profondeur et d'ampleur à l'image très inhabituelle. Le ciel très gris ajoute une touche dramatique à l'ensemble.

Hello Angshu,
Amazing how people (monks in this case) have built a life in such an barren world.
Excellent composition.
Beautiful inclusion of the inscriptions on the rocks on the foreground.

Hi Angshu
yes!!!!!!
We want to go here!
We are planning to visit Leh...i read your note, but i still wonder how easy or hard it is to find this Monastery?
are there local private taxi drivers that we could hire to take us here from Leh??? I know many tourists hire private taxi drivers to take them around.
looking at your shot, i want to see this!!!
wicked place, so much history, so much mystery too.
the photo itself may be a bit over contrasted but to be honest, i don't really care. The subject is just so amazing by itself in any condition.
wonderful post! This makes me want to travel to Leh right now.
beauty
cheers
craig
Also...do you recommend flying to Leh from Delhi? or taking a taxi? bus?
If we fly, are we going to miss the natural mountain beauty? flying sounds good because it cuts down on travel time...what do you think?

Lovely lead into the gompa, now i can relate to this structure from ones in morocco. They are called "Kasbahs". The concept is the same, the design is different. Man has evolved quite similarity, even at the remote corner, at the edge of africa, they decided to build the same things on mountain tops.
intriguing light given the overcast sky.

Dear Dada,
Very nice composed picture showing the stupas and the Bodhist buildings. I like the natural colour the the buildings which are similar to the colour of the hills. The slokas written in the boulders are also interesting.
The cloud is very interesting in this pic which are creating some different view on the photo.

Namaste Angshu
A fine shot definitely makes us to wander around to what looks like ruined buildings lurking in the background but the gompas in the fg rest the eyes nicely. The darker sky and the whole atmosphere add a bit of surreal and mysterious feel and indeed a strong subject full of content made special by this treatment, although imho you have gone slightly overboard with the post processing. Great capture, tfs

Hi again,
Do I see the words Om Mani Padme Hum? lol Fascinating view and I love the places seeing few tourists. Superb composition with the small houses clinging to the hills and the stupas. Strange enough, I saw a few stupas in Russia.
I saw this movie Samsara (in youTube). Very interesting.

Hi Angshuman,
Nice overlapping and repetition of the 2 fg stupa structures. The ornate colorful carvings add interest to them. The pyramid stacked buildings on the bg hill are unusual. Good sharpness and well framed and composed. Good contrasted lighting despite the cloudy day. Tfs!

Hi Angshuman!
I never get tired of the photos of this region. The composition is great with all those elements so well framed. I specially like the light and the dark sky. I guess I rarely see photos of these mani stones and they seem really interesting.
