Haridwar is situated at height of 314 metres from the sea level in Garwhal region. The sacred Ganges flows in this city. According to legend, Haridwar was the place where goddessGangadescended when lordShivareleased the mighty river from the locks of his hair. Haridwar is regarded as one of the 7 holiest places (Sapta Puri) toHindus. Haridwar along withUjjain,NashikandAllahabad is one of 4 sites where drops ofAmrit, the elixir of immortality, accidentally spilled over fromthe pitcher while being carried by the celestial birdGaruda. This is manifested in theKumbha Mela, which is celebrated every 12 years in Haridwar. Alcohol and non-vegetarian food are not permitted in Haridwar. Source : wiki.
