Photographer's Note

India is such a huge country, and with so many cultural expressions, where ultra modern techniques and ways of life that have hardly changed for hundreds of years live side by side, usually without much friction.

In 1988, when I took this photo, India was already quite different from what I had seen in my first visit 16 years earlier, and very much has changed in the 28 years that have followed. But cows walking freely in the streets, and "holy men" wearing not much more than ashes and carrying their few belongings in a bundle, are still seen in certain urban areas.

This is from the city of Madurai in southern India, at the time of the day when cows gathered to be milked. Although they walk freely, finding food wherever possible, they are not "stray cows" but belong to someone and know where to go when their udders are full.

Here is a larger version.

You can see a similar kind of photo, possibly from the same street, as a WS. Both photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.
