Photographer's Note

The sister-in-law of the rickshaw driver I hired all the time, is holding her child. They are a lower caste, cleaning hotel rooms, driving a rickshaw, often taking the worst of the hard work jobs. The caste system is illegal. It is easy for Indians to see what caste someone is. It lives on daily. The state of Kerala has free government education. However the family must pay for books, uniforms, and suffer the socail disgrace of being lower caste. Some people never go to school. Some for a short while. (Government jobs have lower caste quotas, so that is a possibility when grown, if educated).

Great light makes this a good choice for black and white. It feels a bit subterranean but the steps leading out relfects your note and the title. Nice one!

A very ambitious shot Gloria, with obviously very difficult lighting, but a beautifully composed portrait. Not quite perfect, with a bit of glare around the boy, and rather OE wall, but you've managed to keep a lot of detail in the shadowy faces. Generally great result.

Lovely scene, Gloria. A wonderful loving interaction of glances you captured between mother and child. The strong light was well handled overall and the simple background setting makes the adorable main characters stand out even more. Very nice. Hope all is going well, and merry Christmas to you.

Nice image. Great connection between the
mother and the child. I also kind of like seeing all those things on the stairs in the background, giving this image some extra context. Well done.

Although you weren't to know when this was uploaded on 12/20 2004, it is a fitting image in view of recent tragic events.
