Photographer's Note

This is from the Dhuandhar Falls on the Narmada river in central India, a short distance from the city of Jabalpur.

I arrived in Jabalpur after a long overnight journey by train from Bhopal. Jabalpur is another big city, nowadays with more than a million residents, in 1991 probably around 700.000. And yet most of it looked like a small town with no major buildings or important sights, but with a pleasant and easygoing atmosphere.

I have presented Jabalpur earlier in a photo with the somewhat ironic title "Slightly off the beaten track":

It was actually completely off the beaten track, probably the most untouristy major city I ever saw in India. I don't remember meeting any other foreign tourist, so I quite enjoyed my short stay.

The only sight worth mentioning is about 20 km away from the city. At a place called Bhedaghat the Narmada river crashes down a waterfall and cuts its way through steep rocks.

I have to admit I wasn't very impressed. I didn't stay long because the heat was oppressive, with no protection from the sun and no refreshments available. Besides, there wasn't really much to see. The bus stopped at least 500 meters from the river, possibly (that's what I tought) in an arrangement with the local salesmen whose stalls lined the road offering "incredibly ugly" (according to my diary) souvenirs.

I have seen in recent photos that you can now make excursions by boat along the river between the marble rocks. There is even a ropeway taking you above the waterfalls. I didn't see anything of that in 1991.

In addition to the heat, the light was very harsh. In spite of that I think I managed a fairly decent exposure. In the WS is a look in the other direction. Both photos were of course scanned from Kodachrome slides.
