Photographer's Note

Centuries of evolution have produced Indonesian fishing boats that are superbly functional and beautifully crafted. These proud sailing crafts that fishermen take in the beauty and design of their boats are fashioned of local natural materials and because of their flexible design can withstand the continual punishment of wind and waves at high seas.

For hundreds of thousands of Indonesian fishermen and their families, these boats are clearly a matter of life and death. The boats are intimately intertwined with the lives of the people, and strong ancient traditions prescribe how a boat must be built and launched. Elaborate ceremonies are conducted to attract the life-spirit that dwells within a boat, including the symbolic wedding of its male and female parts.

These are local traditional fishing boats docking at a picturesque Sendang Biru fishing village awaiting tidal change, south of Malang City East Java. Taken on a slight cloudy late afternoon as these crafts are safely sheltered along the narrow channel by Sempu Island in the background. Exposed directly to the wide open Indian Ocean, most of beaches on East Java's south coast are proned to sea erosion due to the continuous crashing surf and strong wind. So this is the natural safe haven for anchoring away from hostile condition of the sea which has constantly changed the unsheltered coastal lines.

Hi Abmdsudi,

You're capturing well this place by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see colorful fishing boats with the tasteful decoration which is standing by at the shoal of the seashore. I know well that the fisherman is peole working under severe nature environment of rough sea or storm etc,. Probably, for such a reason, this is work peculiar to a male.

Hi Abmdsudi,
My first thought on seeing this was of a row of ancient dragons along the shore, waiting to go on land and attack. The points of the flags remind me of the scales and horns, and the colors are those I would associate with such creatures. A beautiful viewpoint to show this fine scene, and the threatening sky behind makes a wonderful backdrop. Love your note too, and thanks for the great workshop. Really nicely done, I am really pleased to see this excellent shot today, the epitome of Trekearth.

Wonderfull capture, quite interesting.
A good sample of the unlimited phantasy of the Asian people, you nowhere would be able to see such colorfull painted boats in the western hemisphere. A pity !

I have not yet been to Indonesia, your images from here certainly makes me wish to go there sooner than later, even though it is already on my list. There is so much to look at here even at this size, there so much details and such an array of color palette. It also show how colorful is the culture of the people here. I didn't know that you could paint a boat with so many colours! Like life - it is colourful sometimes and dark at other times. Like a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis - it struggles but eventually is clothed in such beautiful colours. Judging by your note these boats tell a similar story.

At first view the are similar at the Chinese ones, after reading your ( as always) informative note I realized the role they play in Indonesian people and they cared about them

Anyway they manage to work in in very colorful boats, must be nice to watch them sailing

very good capture of these traditionally colorful boats. The area where they are seems so busy with colors and shapes. The light was great which we also see further behind. The boats are set against a lovely view full of atmosphere.
