Photographer's Note

This Jakartan traffic police (polisi) was idly standing by and probably waiting for backup as the traffic volume began to build for the afternoon rush hour. Like most urban areas, one of Jakarta's main problems is traffic. And like many Asian countries, traffic rules are rarely obeyed to the letter. As a result traffic officers are often posted at busy intersections and U-turn locations to help direct traffic and maintain order. Sometimes they help, but sometimes they only add to the problem.

This officer shows another problem in many highly urbanized areas -- air pollution. Of all the many pollution sources, poorly regulated automotive emissions rank as the leading cause of smog and poor air quality. Many traffic polisi don these respirator masks to filter out the particulate emission coming from buses, motorcycles, and cars.
