Photographer's Note

Motorbikes swarm through Jakarta traffic almost the same way water flows through and around pebbles in a creek. They are the most ubiquitous form of transportation in the city. Riders weave through cars, buses, and pedestrestians in every which way, with a delicate balance of careful attention and reckless abandon. At a stopped intersection, bikes will make their way to the front by cutting in front, behind, and aside their compatriots on the road. They will congregate there in a large mass like the one pictured here. At least until the light turns green...

For me, motorbikes are probably the second most dreaded part of being a motorist in Jakarta (only after the sheer volume of traffic). You always have to keep a lookout for them since they can pop out from anywhere. Yet they are fairly agile and self-reliant, usually avoiding collisions themselves.

I purposely darkened and desaturated the photograph to give it a heavier feeling. I wanted to bring "mass" into the image and to add the sense of caution that I mentioned in my narrative.
