Photographer's Note
Sorry for the long delay in posting. I've been terribly busy lately. Here's another photo from my trip to Jakarta.
We were driving down a busy street in Central Jakarta when I spotted this boy sitting on the median of the road. It was starting to rain and this boy seemed so lonely. The temperature outside was hovering around 30C, but the way this boy was huddled, you'd think it was much colder. The expression on the boy's face made me think about what he may have been through -- there just seems to be a look of fear, dispair, and sadness in him.
There are many boys running around the street in Jakarta. I asked my guide why they weren't in school and she said that even though public education is free, many families are so poor that a child is forced to quit school so that he can work as a street salesman or a parking attendant to earn extra money for the family.
This is such a common occurance in many parts of the world. But I think most Westerners are too complacent to remember and acknowledge those less fortunate who are struggling to find their next meal. Even when the rich do lend a hand out to the poor, I think many 2nd world countries -- those countries trapped between industrial modernization and poverty -- like Indonesia, are often forgotten.

a new photo!!! yay!!! lol
good to see you back on calvin!
this is a good contribution. interesting to see the boy sitting amongst such long grass with urban reality happening behind him. i particularly like the dof, keeping the background blurry and out of focus. the boy's face being so dark makes him look sad, adding to the expression on his face.
nice realism. great photo!

the right words to describe this image are taking time to come as this image has a thousand stories in it. The tall grass reeds that the boy has surrrounded himself with seam to embrace him where humans haven't. The fuzzy background reiterates the fact that often people just dont have time for those that are in need of help, whether it is financially or psychologically. and often that isnt helped by one's family, as they too have their own problems to deal with. your note gave a great insight to life for some unfortunate people, i hope that the boy has more luck coming to him in his future. thank you for sharing this thought provoking snapshot in this boys life.
